Past Events

This dynamic event took place in the vibrant city of Blantyre, Malawi on August 23 – 24, 2024. The two-day gathering hoped to bring together a diverse group of professionals, researchers, and thought leaders from Malawi and around the globe to explore the forefront of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) and its potential impact on the development of Malawi.

SMS Fraud Detection - 10th May, 2024

The event was held at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences(MUBAS), ODeL building on 10th May 2024 from 14:00 PM to 16:00 pm. The event aimed at raising awareness on the existence of SMS fraud, how people can identify fraudulent SMS messages to protect themselves and how machine learning can be used to help combat the SMS fraud in Malawi. On the machine learning significance to combat SMS fraud, we highlighted our recent research findings from the research project titled “SMS Fraud Detection Using Machine Learning in Malawi” The research aimed at investigating the potential of using machine learning to classify Chichewa SMS messages as fraudulent and non-fraudulent. In attendance were the students from MUBAS who were involved in the SMS data collection, members of staff, MSU Director of Publicity and Publications and the invited guests from TNM and Inq.

AI GRAND CHALLENGES – Practical AI Solutions for Malawi Workshop

This was a research workshop in which we presented the work and findings of the project “AI GRAND CHALLENGES – Practical AI Solutions for Malawi” was held at Amaryllis Hotel in Blantyre on 28th March 2024 from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. The theme was “Can Generative AI provide solutions for challenges faced in healthcare in Malawi?”. We reported on our work in experimenting with generative AI to provide self-directed access to knowledge for healthcare professionals in Malawi. Among the invitees were our partners at Lilongwe and Blantyre District Health Offices, the Public Health Institute of Malawi, Digital Health, and invitees from academia and industry. The workshop was organised for all those who have been involved in the project.

Lilongwe District Health Office Engagement Event

KAI Lab also engaged with the Lilongwe District Health Office from 1st to 2nd February, 2024. The aim of the meeting was to solicit feedback from the DHO on IntelSurv-an intelligent disease surveillance data feedback system that the lab is developing. This involved users installing the tool and providing input on different aspects including design, processing and topic coverage.

INSPIRE PEACH Dissemination Workshop

The Lab took part in the INSPIRE PEACH Dissemination Workshop held on 26th and 27th June 2023 in Blantyre, Malawi. The lead, Dr Amelia Taylor, gave a presentation on Lessons and Applications from utilising OMOP to Malawi Data.

The Pan African Big Data, Analytics and AI 3rd Annual Conference.

The Lab also took part in the Pan African Big Data, Analytics and AI 3rd Annual Conference held on 27th and 28th April, 2023 in Lilongwe, Malawi. The lead, Dr Amelia Taylor, gave a presentation on AI for Organisations in Malawi. Moses Gwaza (developer) also gave a presentation on Using OHDSI for health informatics in Malawi.
